Under the BC Hydro Low Carbon Electrification (LCE) program, PE Tech produced a compelling study evaluating the feasibility of enhanced biomass fuel efficiency within a BC pulp and paper mill. The primary objective was to determine if pre-drying hog fuel prior to use in the power boiler could significantly reduce the natural gas consumption needed to evaporate moisture, thereby curtailing carbon emissions.

Central to the study was the exploration of low carbon electrification alternatives as potential heat sources for a biomass dryer. Given that biomass dryers conventionally rely on fossil fuels, steam, or high-temperature fluids, the investigation focused on how these traditional energy sources could be effectively supplemented or replaced with electrically powered solutions. The comprehensive analysis compared current operational costs and carbon emissions with the projected outcomes of suggested system modifications, ultimately zeroing in on the most energy-efficient approaches.

The study culminated in identifying three promising technologies for drying hog fuel: biomass fines burners, heat pumps utilizing waste heat, and upgraded mechanical dewatering presses. Naturally, each technology presented individual advantages and constraints, which were extensively detailed in the study; however, they all offered substantial cost and emission reductions with appropriate implementation, exemplifying the potential of technological advancements to support capital interests and environmental needs concurrently. Taking into consideration the unique elements of the mill in question, the standout option was upgrading the mechanical dewatering equipment for increased efficiency and operational savings. Critically, it was noted that combining this upgrade with any of the other alternatives in the study would consistently yield a more favourable return on investment by offsetting the need for other capital and energy-intensive implementations to achieve the required output.

PE Tech’s study not only charts a path for significant enhancements in biomass fuel utilization, but also crucially aligns the growing industry commitment to sustainability. For those interested in realizing similar benefits in any area of manufacturing operations, PE Tech’s team of industry experts are ready to provide tailored, cutting edge solutions.
